2023 BMW X2

Safety

Both the Discovery Sport and X2 have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Discovery Sport has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The X2’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Discovery Sport. But it costs extra on the X2.

The Discovery Sport has a standard 3D Surround Camera to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The X2 only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

The Discovery Sport’s blind spot warning system uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. The X2 doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver’s blind spots.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Discovery Sport’s standard Rear Traffic Monitor uses sensors in the rear to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side and Rear Traffic Braking automatically engages the brakes to help avoid a collision. The X2 doesn’t offer a rear cross-path warning system.

The Discovery Sport’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The X2 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Compared to metal, the Discovery Sport’s plastic fuel tank can withstand harder, more intrusive impacts without leaking; this decreases the possibility of fire. The BMW X2 has a metal gas tank.

Both the Discovery Sport and the X2 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems and rearview cameras.

Engine

The Discovery Sport’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 18 more horsepower (246 vs. 228) and 11 lbs.-ft. more torque (269 vs. 258) than the X2’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

Fuel Economy and Range

The Discovery Sport has 1.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the X2 (17.7 vs. 16.1 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Land Rover Discovery Sport higher (7 out of 10) than the BMW X2 (3 to 7). This means the Discovery Sport produces up to 24.5 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the X2 every 15,000 miles.

Transmission

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Land Rover Discovery Sport, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the X2.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Discovery Sport’s standard brake rotors are larger than those on the X2:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Discovery Sport has larger standard tires than the X2 (235/60R18 vs. 225/50R18). The Discovery Sport’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the X2 (245/45R21 vs. 225/50R18).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Discovery Sport offers optional 21-inch wheels. The X2’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The Discovery Sport has a standard full size spare (not available on 7-Passenger) so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the X2; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare or run-flat tires, either of which has mileage and speed limitations.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Discovery Sport’s wheelbase is 2.8 inches longer than on the X2 (107.9 inches vs. 105.1 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Discovery Sport is 2.4 inches wider in the front and 2.7 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the X2.

For greater off-road capability the Discovery Sport has a 1.1 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the X2 (8.3 vs. 7.2 inches), allowing the Discovery Sport to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Passenger Space

The Discovery Sport offers optional seating for 7 passengers; the X2 can only carry 5.

The Discovery Sport has .3 inches more front headroom, 1.7 inches more front shoulder room, 1.7 inches more rear headroom, 1.4 inches more rear legroom and 2 inches more rear shoulder room than the X2.

A control in the cargo area automatically lowers the Discovery Sport with 5+2 Seating’s second row seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The X2 doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

Payload and Towing

The Discovery Sport has a 4409 lbs. towing capacity. The X2 has no towing capacity.

Standard Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) on the Discovery Sport uses the Dynamic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The X2 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

The Discovery Sport has a much higher standard payload capacity than the X2 (1515 vs. 941 lbs.).

The Discovery Sport has a much higher maximum payload capacity than the X2 (1670 vs. 970 lbs.).

Ergonomics

The Discovery Sport has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The X2 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Discovery Sport has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the X2 only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Discovery Sport offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The X2 doesn’t offer headlight washers.

To better shield the driver and front passenger’s vision, the Discovery Sport has standard dual-element sun visors that can block glare from two directions simultaneously. The X2 doesn’t offer secondary sun visors.

The Discovery Sport has standard heated front seats. Heated front seats cost extra on the X2. The Discovery Sport also offers optional heated second row seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the X2.

The Discovery Sport has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the X2.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Land Rover Discovery Sport has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the X2.

Recommendations

The Land Rover Discovery Sport outsold the BMW X2 by over two to one during 2022.
