Safety

Both the Discovery Sport and X1 have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Discovery Sport has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The X1’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

Both the Discovery Sport and the X1 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Engine

The Discovery Sport’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 5 more horsepower (246 vs. 241) than the X1 xDrive28i’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

Fuel Economy and Range

The Discovery Sport has 3.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the X1 (17.7 vs. 14.3 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Transmission

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Land Rover Discovery Sport, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the X1.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Discovery Sport’s standard brake rotors are larger than those on the X1:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Discovery Sport has larger standard tires than the X1 (235/60R18 vs. 225/55R18).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Discovery Sport offers optional 21-inch wheels. The X1’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The Discovery Sport has a standard full size spare (not available on 7-Passenger) so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the X1; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Discovery Sport’s wheelbase is 1.9 inches longer than on the X1 (107.9 inches vs. 106 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Discovery Sport is 2 inches wider in the front and 2.2 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the X1.

For greater off-road capability the Discovery Sport has a greater minimum ground clearance than the X1 (8.3 vs. 8.1 inches), allowing the Discovery Sport to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Passenger Space

The Discovery Sport offers optional seating for 7 passengers; the X1 can only carry 5.

The Discovery Sport has 1.2 inches more front shoulder room, 1.1 inches more rear legroom and .8 inches more rear shoulder room than the X1.

Cargo Capacity

The Discovery Sport’s cargo area provides more volume than the X1.

A control in the cargo area automatically lowers the Discovery Sport with 5+2 Seating’s second row seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The X1 doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

Payload and Towing

The Discovery Sport’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the X1’s (4409 vs. 3500 pounds).

The Discovery Sport has a much higher standard payload capacity than the X1 (1515 vs. 1111 lbs.).

The Discovery Sport has a much higher maximum payload capacity than the X1 (1670 vs. 1111 lbs.).

Ergonomics

The Discovery Sport’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The X1’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

The Discovery Sport’s standard Keyless Entry allow you to unlock the doors from any outside door handle, open the cargo door, and start the engine, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Comfort Go standard on the X1 only offers hands-free access for the ignition, none to unlock the vehicle.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Discovery Sport has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the X1 only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Discovery Sport offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The X1 doesn’t offer headlight washers.

The Discovery Sport’s standard side window demisters help clear frost or condensation from the side windows in the winter. The X1 doesn’t even offer side window demisters, so the driver may have to wipe the windows from the outside to gain side vision.

The Discovery Sport has standard heated front seats. Heated front seats cost extra on the X1. The Discovery Sport also offers optional heated second row seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the X1.

The Discovery Sport has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the X1.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Land Rover Discovery Sport has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the X1.
